Corpus Christi Maritime & Admiralty

Maritime law, also referred to as Admiralty law, is a broad body of law that covers maritime offenses.  Maritime law is known as “the Law of the Sea”, and it governs coastal and international waters.  Maritime law also stipulates rules and regulations related to injuries sustained by seamen while they are aboard ships.

According to Maritime law, when a seaman is injured aboard a ship, he/she must be compensated for his/her injuries.  This is due to the terms outlined in the Jones Act.  The Jones Act was created in 1920, and it allows injured sailors to collect compensation from the ship owner or captain, if their injuries were a result of negligence.  The compensation injured sailors receive is meant to cover their lost wages, lost future wages, medical treatment, and pain and suffering.

Common Maritime Injuries
If a person is a crew member of a vessel (boat), he/she is considered a seaman.  Seamen have some of the most vigorous, physically challenging jobs.  These jobs can result in serious injuries if the seamen are working in unsafe conditions.  Serious injuries can also result from ship owner’s or captain’s negligence.  Common Maritime injuries include:

  • Neck injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Brain injuries
  • Broken bones

Seamen are susceptible to injuries every day when they are aboard vessels.  If ship owners or captains do not implement proper precautions, they place their workers at great physical risk.  If you are a seaman, and you sustained a serious injury due to your employer’s negligence, you should speak with a qualified Maritime/Admiralty lawyer immediately.
