About Courts-Martial Proceedings
When military personnel commit criminal offenses, they face legal action by courts-martial rather than in civilian courts. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) clearly outlines criminal offenses and their penalties, as well as Courts-Martial procedures. There are three types of courts-martial: general, summary and special. General Courts-Martial are the most serious, and typically involve offenses, which would be classified as felonies in civilian court. Special Courts-Martial are conducted for offenses that may equate misdemeanors in civilian court. Summary Courts-Martial are the least serious of the three and involves lesser offenses that are usually only punishable to pay reduction or confinement for up to 1 month.
